Annulment is not the same as dissolution of marriage. Annulment is more like voiding a marriage, where the world considers the marriage not to have existed in the first place. Annulment is not an option for most couples.
Annulments commence and proceed just as dissolutions proceed.
When the nullity of the marriage is proven, then the court will adjudicate the marriage to be null and void, or as if the marriage never happened.
While the legal distinction is different between divorce and annulment, the property rights of the spouses, maintenance, and support and custody of children as they relate to dissolution of marriage are applicable to proceedings for annulment.
